Non-Maternity plans on the California individual health insurance market

We like to update our California health insurance articles periodically to make sure they reflect current information and no page requires that more than this once concerning non-maternity plans on the market.

Why is that?

Well...there are no longer any non-maternity plans in California effective July 1st 2012. Let's review the law that change this, the repercussions, and how find savings in light of these repercussions.

Prior to this date and the new California law that mandates maternity benefits on all plans (old, new, and Grandfathered), a good 80% of the plans available on the market were non-maternity.

This means that they would not cover maternity coverage.

The savings to having these plans as compared to the plans that covered maternity were significant with savings of 50%-100% for comparable coverage being the norm. In fact, when Health Reform was passed, we lost most of our maternity plans and remaining ones jumped 50-60%.

Those days are gone and now all plans cover maternity.

California was just an early adopter of what will happen Nationwide with the main Health Reform bill. On one hand, it's good to have maternity coverage on the plans so women are not forced to decide whether to pay more now or go with non-maternity and hope for the best later. There will be resulting increase in price of course and we expect individual family health insurance rates to quickly catch up with Group health rates which are roughly double if we could compare comparable coverage.

Changes from Obamacare

The Exchange will force the remaining differences out as the plans are standardized for both individual and group plans.

Since we expect rates to increase as a result of this change (they have to since maternity is a very expensive medical service running from $10K to $1M depending on complications), how can we offset this increase?

At this point, we want to focus on more catastrophic plans such as Anthem's Clear Protection $3300 or Health Net's new plans. Keep in mind that all these plans will go away Jan 1st, 2014 and we will have four options: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

We do not have the rates and benefits for these plans yet but we will add them as soon as available. All California group health plans cover maternity already.
