What exactly does "major carrier" mean and why is this important?
There are probably a dozen carriers that you can choose from on the California market but we purposely narrowed it down to 4-5 on the individual family market and 10+ on the group market to mirror the reality out there in the market.
These are the carriers that have a strong track record in the respective market and that's important.
We have a California major carrier comparison here.
You can always run your California quote across major carriers available here:
We get calls almost daily from a person who has a second tier (or even third or fourth) carrier and they're running into major issues with sizeable claims.
That's a bad place to be and we want to do everything we can to help our clients avoid this situation.
We also get the calls from clients who purchased a very inexpensive California health policy only to see it explode in costs later.
A good percentage of these people are unable to change carriers due to health issues so we have a bad situation there.
We look for carriers that have a wide benefits breadth (many plans to choose from with PPO, HMO, and HSA options), good and stable (key point there!) pricing over a period of 3-5 years, and a strong provider network.
Based on these criteria, we have chosen the plans to quote in our engine.
You can access the online application here:
Currently, depending on the market segment you're looking at, Kaiser, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Health Net, Aetna, United (group), and AARP (Senior) are the main carriers in California.
It can differ depending on the market so here's the general breakout by Covered Ca, Medicare, and Small Business respectively (each image links to quote for that market):
